Candles, original oak beams and an inglenook fireplace big enough to boil a big bad wolf make the dining room of this 15th century coaching inn (one of the oldest in Britain) impossibly romantic. Not the ideal venue for a strategy meeting with marketing then, but perfect for weekends away with a loved one. There’s some retro style guilty pleasures to be had in the form of local Gales beer battered whiting with mushy peas and tartar sauce Or a twice baked cheese soufflé with poached pear, walnuts and caramelised onions. For dessert, British favourites like treacle tart and apple crumble sit alongside more refined French offerings such as mango syllabub with raspberry coulis and pistachio macaroons.
