Sharrow Bay Country House Hotel

This lakeside hotel has gained an outstanding reputation for excellence since opening in 1948. The restaurant offers classic fine dining in plush surroundings overlooking Ullswater. The six course dinner menu (with a vegetarian alternative also available) includes sorbet and cheese courses. This could commence with breast of smoked duck, spiced poached pear, Cashel Blue cheese and walnut dressing followed by a delicate plaice fillet with braised leeks and truffles. Mains could include braised shoulder of Herdwick lamb, creamed savoury cabbage, parsnip purée with tomato and rosemary sauce. For dessert there is always the famous icky sticky toffee pudding which was reputedly invented by the hotel’s founder Francis Coulson. Sharrow Bay has also recently introduced a ten course tasting menu.
