This fine Georgian house restaurant overlooking the River Wye with its oak-panelling and antique tables is especially romantic at dinner when it’s lit by candlelight. Chef John Whelan’s French food makes good use of locally sourced ingredients including game from the nearby Chatsworth estate. Seasonal dishes might include spring onion risotto with English asparagus; a luxurious chicken and morel ravioli with cep emulsion and Devon crab with tempura crayfish. Derbyshire lamb cutlets are paired with a basil mousse; wild English turbot with shitake mushrooms and sea bass with linguine pasta and tomato dressing. Finish with raspberry crème brûlée, bitter chocolate delice or a plate of splendid British cheeses.
