Chef Alex Bentley’s modern British style favours fish with a menu that offers some five piscine starters including seared scallops and smoked eel imaginatively partnered with cauliflower beignet or red mullet and soft shell crab with chickpeas, sweet fennel and white radishes. Baked seabass with seaweed and fried oyster continues the theme but meat eaters are also treated to loin of venison with chestnut rissole and bitter chocolate sauce and vegetarians can enjoy the likes of hand-rolled lasagne with goat’s cheese, asparagus and pesto. France is the star of the strong wine list that features a number of half bottles.
