A fabulous circular window is one feature in the chic dining room overlooking Torbay Bay, a colonial elegance also found in the décor thanks to rattan chairs. The inventive modern English menu kicks off with unctuous starters of local Start Bay crab made into a savoury trifle; velouté of pea with ham tortellini or beetroot risotto with a horseradish cream. Imaginative touches to main courses include a liquorice sorbet accompanying tournedos of salmon with fennel and pain perdu and butter poached South Devon beef fillet given a horseradish emulsion and confit onion garnish while pork tenderloin comes with an English tea and prune mash. Honeycomb soufflé or white chocolate soup with dark chocolate and lemongrass ravioli or well-sourced West Country cheeses follow.
