The Old Butcher's Restaurant

Passing tourists stop to stare at the brace of pheasants hanging over the door of this smart but casual restaurant. It’s not just a clever ploy to get people to check out the delicious menu. It’s also a reminder of the days when this used to be the village butchers, and to chef and owner Peter Robinson’s use of local ingredients, many of which are produced within thirty miles of the kitchen door. Even the meat for globally influenced dishes such as Japanese poached pork belly with chilli, pak choi and noodles or home-made prosciutto with taleggio and pickled onions comes from the chef’s own herd of pigs. Afternoon tea attracts tired ramblers and you might spot members of the local shoot exchanging a bird or two for a restorative glass of claret.
