The conservatory dining room with its clean, cool lines and painted mural is a fine backdrop for chef Chris Tabbitt’s cosmopolitan, modern British cooking. Sourcing is wide-ranging, from Cornish lamb to Isle of Lewis smoked salmon. Italy and Spain’s larder are also plundered for olives, chorizo and boccaccini and taleggio cheeses. Sweet potato soup with maple syrup and mustard makes an unusual but delicious starter with Swiss chard with taleggio and a shallot dressing or foie gras and smoked chicken terrine offering more main stream alternatives. Mains might include pork belly with bubble and squeak or slow-braised blade of beef with mushroom and red wine risotto. The list of 300 interesting wines is fairly priced.
