This elegant stalwart overlooking lake Windermere continues the longstanding tradition set by its former chef-patron John Tovey’s by offering a set menu served at sunset in the flamboyant dining room. Present incumbent Jamie Roberts has innovated slightly by introducing an alternative a la carte option and executes the English country style with panache. There might be crab and sweetcorn broth or scallops on potato purée with black pudding to start followed by slow roasted pork belly with braised salsify; roasted Kenmere lamb and a basil pommes purée or seared cod embellished by a red pepper and tomato sauce.
