Chef and owner Mark Dodson spent thirteen years as head chef of the legendary Waterside Inn in Bray before taking over this rural 13th century thatched inn in 2005. Wife Sarah oversees the modernized dining room with its stripped floors and Exmoor views. Luxurious dishes such as pan fried scallops with pear and vanilla or Devon beef fillet with rich oxtail, parsnip purée hint at Dodson’s classical French cuisine background. But there’s heartier offerings too in the shape of leek and potato soup with flaked smoked haddock and chive cream or roulade of pork belly, braised red cabbage, apple compote. The interesting wine list excels particularly in France.

| Local Directions: | Just off the A361 North Devon link road, Knowstone is signposted and the Masons Arms is also signed with brown tourist signs. From the link road cross a cattle grid and then turn first left cross another cattle grid and continue into Knowstone. Once in Knowstone turn right and we are 100yds on the left. |
