Le Poussin at Whitley Ridge

For a true taste of the fruits of the New Forest, head to this imposing former royal hunting lodge. Chef Alex Aiken is one of the country’s leading wild mushroom and game experts and puts the natural bounty that surrounds him on his menus. Wild mushrooms might accompany a roasted quail served off the bone, a cutlet of veal with Anna potatoes or appear in an autumn salad with truffle salad cream. Haunch of New Forest venison is served rare with mashed potato, pear and walnut. Seafood dishes such as seared scallop on spiced lentils with cauliflower cream and Cabernet Sauvignon syrup are equally as impressive. Ask for a window table in the elegant dining room that overlooks the grounds.
