Knockinaam Lodge
This remote Victorian lodge was the venue for war time meetings between Churchill and Eisenhower, thanks to its proximity to a once warring Atlantic. Views of Ireland can be glimpsed from the rose-coloured dining room lit by candles. Chef Tony Pierce’s cooking on the set menu follows along modern European lines. It’s definitely worth the drive down the single-track road to sample the likes of duck foie gras with puy lentils partnered with beurre noisette; ravioli of sweetbreads or grilled native salmon, potato wafer and paysanne of leek with a red wine and star anise reduction. Soufflés like crème de menthe and chocolate or hot banana Gallliano are equally mesmerising. Wines favour France, Germany and Australia.
