Eponymous chef and wine connoisseur Jake Saul Watkins may have recently relocated along with his 800 wines from his tiny restaurant to a more spacious nearby converted pub, but his stylish cooking and exacting sourcing are still second to none in the area. The extra space encompasses a terrace and private dining room alongside the cool, pale restaurant with its well spaced tables and smooth French service. Come here for the finest of classic Franglais food. Roasted foie gras with shallot Tarte Tatin tantalises as does a Dover sole and local wild mushroom fricassee and fillet of beef with a melting oxtail suet pudding. An encore of feuillantine of rhubarb with ginger jelly gets a warm round of applause.
JSW is part of the following Editors' Picks:
"Jake Watkins is the head chef of JSW, a French restaurant in an atmospheric 17th century Hampshire coaching inn. The cooking emphasises British ingredients, with open ravioli of smoked haddock and leek cress one example of a dish that I particularly liked here. The emphasis on British food continues to the desserts, with classics such as posset, made here with lime rather than the traditional lemon."
