Hartwell House

This magnificent stately pile, once home to prominent Whig landowners, is elegance personified. Decorative ceilings, panelling, antiques and paintings are part of this Jacobean and Georgian property overlooking 90 acres of parkland. Unstuffiness, however, also abounds despite its grandeur. The kitchen gardens’ abundance is used by Daniel Richardson who also sources local game for the opulent dining room. Layering is this chef’s forte. Scallops are partnered with fennel pollen, peashoots and soya beans; Oxfordshire lamb is wrapped in Mediterranean vegetables and served on a lamb shank and garlic sauce, while banana soufflé is paired with caramelised bananas and honeycomb ice cream.
