This restaurant and brasserie has been attracting locals and foodies alike for over a decade. Recently refurbished, the interior now sports a sexy chocolate and red design and posh Italian furniture. Lauded chef Andy McLeish oversees an enticing menu of modern British dishes. Start with a delicate raviolo of lobster and king prawn with spiced white cabbage and lobster and lemongrass velouté followed by a meaty main of roast bavette (skirt steak) of Oxfordshire beef, braised oxtail, with celeriac puree and oxtail jus. Order the assiette of desserts to try a selection of miniature puddings that might include hot chocolate fondant and lemon tart. Sample a pre dinner Green Goddess cocktail made with vodka, apple and absinthe in the stylish bar.
Chapter One is part of the following Editors' Picks:
"This top notch restaurant and brasserie sports a sexy chocolate and red design and posh Italian furniture and boats the talents of lauded chef Andy McLeish. His Christmas Day offering includes terrine of foie gras and smoked duck followed by baked halibut with comte crust, or traditional black feathered roast turkey."
"This sleek contemporary space brings West End glamour and top end cooking to the south London borough of Bromley. Chef Andy McLeish’s food is all about flavour and refinement with dishes such as jugged hare with truffled potato espuma and hare satay."
"Andrew McCleish has been at the helm of the Chapter One kitchen since 2000, and has built up a reputation for classy but good value cooking on quite a large scale (the restaurant can seat 150 diners). The cooking ranges in style: you can encounter simple but carefully executed dishes such as a salad of eel and mackerel, but the kitchen can also produce more elaborate fare. An example is jugged hare with truffle espuma, mash and a little piece of hare saté on a skewer, garnished with a slice of black truffle, a gorgeously rich dish. Three courses at lunch from a full menu cost just £26, and there is a 3 course menu du jour at an even more reasonable £19.95. The lengthy wine list follows the same value formula, with most of the list under £50 and with fair mark-up levels throughout."
