This converted rural 17th century coaching inn is set in idyllic Monmouthshire countryside overlooking Monnow River. Run since 2001 by husband and wife team William and Janet Hutchings, the inn has been sensitively refurbished, retaining period features such as flagstone floors and oak beams. The daily changing modern British menu makes the most of local produce. Start with pan roasted quail ravioli, wilted baby spinach, wild mushroom compote and white bean purée or goat’s cheese parfait with an assiette of cucumber that includes a minted soup, jelly, ravioli and carpaccio. Fillet of Brecon beef topped with wild mushroom glaze, fondant potato, creamed leek and spinach, pan fried foie gras and horseradish sauce makes for a substantial main.
