One of England’s loveliest villages is home to one of its oldest inns. Dating back more than a millennia, the typically Cotswold exterior hides a swish interior. Exposed stone walls and two open fireplaces counterpoint etched glass screens and designer chairs. There’s some fashionable stylings on a menu that might include Stilton panna Cotta with Carpaccio of beef and bitter lemon jelly served with Scottish smoked salmon and warm caper berries. You might find Cornish mackerel paired with oxtail tortellini among the mains, but for the most part they rely on classic combinations such as guinea fowl, creamed Savoy cabbage and mustard scented puy lentils. The Royalist hotel also houses the Eagle and Child which serves high quality gastropub grub.
