Chef Marcus Ashenford is the unsung culinary hero of the Cotswolds, perhaps because he is usually to be found in his kitchen rather than on our TV screens. He first found success at Le Chavignol restaruant in nearby Chipping Norton and opened this diminutive (just 28 seats spread over two cosy wood-beamed dining rooms) with his wife Kate in 2003. Since then, Ashenford’s ambitious cooking has won much critical acclaim. Dishes on the regularly changing set menu could include Old Spot pork with crackling, fondant potato, stuffed cabbage and a cider jus, pigeon breast with foie gras, bubble and squeak, and onion confit or tuna rillette with pickled radish and mango chutney.
