The Tolbooth Museum

Castle Street, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, AB11 5BQ

There’s nothing like a tour of an old Scottish prison to educate and enlighten on the brutal manner in which prisoners were kept incarcerated in days gone by. Visit the Tolbooth Museum in Aberdeen and you’ll discover one of the best preserved 17th century gaols in Scotland, the perfect setting to learn more about the history and development of crime and punishment through the centuries. Peep through the barred windows into the cells, gawp at the horribly torturous Maiden and feel a shiver run down your spine at the sight of the blade of the 17th century guillotine on display. The museum has guides and if you time your visit right you can watch a re-enactment of how life was lived in the Tolbooth many years ago.
