Castle Cornet

Castle Emplacement, St Peter Port, Guernsey, GY1 1AU

There’s a lot of bang for your buck at Guernsey’s Castle Cornet, what with five museums to get around plus some exploring of the castle’s turrets for wonderful views across the docks and over to the mainland. The castle is the island’s ancient harbour fortress and inside you’ll find the maritime museum in the Upper Barracks building which includes a display on the Gallo-Roman wreck dredged up in 1985 from the harbour mouth. In the Lower Barracks is the Story of Castle Cornet which explains the history of the building using replicas and models plus a useful audio presentation about the explosion of 1672 which destroyed a lot of the building. On top of that you’ve got the 201 Squadron RAF (Guernsey’s Own) Museum, a recounting of the relationship between the island and the RAF unit, plus the militia museums one of which tells the tales of the Guernseymen who fought in the Great War. Try and catch the free guided tour, which puts it all in context wonderfully, and the eardrum shattering noon cannon firing.
