Despite not having much interest in the game, I found myself completely absorbed in the wonderful British Golf Museum in the historic town of St Andrews. For instance, did you know that James II banned the game because its popularity was putting people off archery or that Mary Queen of Scots caused a scandal by playing golf (which she loved) just days after her husband Darnley’s death? This thorough working over of the history of golf is presented within excellent historic context and is well worth a visit, golf-lover or not. If you are a player, study the bronzed grip of Nick Faldo (to see where you are going wrong) or settle down to watch some old Open Championships on the museum’s TV. Kids will enjoy the opportunity to dress up in old fashioned golfing gear and take a swing with a putter at the “18th hole” area. Lots of fun.

British Golf Museum is part of the following Editors' Picks:

Five Reasons To Visit St Andrews by Rebecca Winward

"You didn't think I'd write about St Andrews without shoehorning in a golf-related attraction did you? Well, in my defence this one will amuse the whole family, rather than just the die-hard fans, and it is after all our national museum on the subject. Here there's the opportunity to find out about the lively history of this sport that's become an obsession for many, and there's plenty of hands-on activities for children too."
