Aberdeen Maritime Museum

Shiprow, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, AB11 5BY

Aberdeen and the lives of its people have always been intricately woven with the North Sea. The city’s wealth came from the oil and gas industry made possible by the North Sea and it is impossible to understand the lives of those who have lived here in the past as well as now without studying life at sea. Aberdeen Maritime Museum does this beautifully. Sitting on Shiprow, incorporating the historic Provost Ross’ House and overlooking the harbour and moody depths of the sea beyond, the building stretches over many floors and examines everything from ship building, fishing and clippers to how an oil rig works. There are loads of lunchtime talks and concerts through the year plus lots of family events. With plenty of hands-on exhibits, this is a great place for children. And there’s a lovely little café to boot.
