Scottish National Portrait Gallery
Built in the 1880s, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery is a visual history of Scotland from the 16th century to the present day. Told through portraits of the people who shaped it from royals and rebels, heroes and villains to poets and philosophers, including Mary Queen of Scots, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns. All portraits are of Scots, but not all by Scots, works by great artists such as Van Dyck, Gainsborough and Rodin are displayed in the gallery. The National Photography Collection is housed here and includes works by Hill and Adamson, the Scottish pioneers of photography.
