Dalrymple Street, Girvan, Ayrshire, KA26 9AE
A Scottish Baronial style building in the Scottish town of Girvan, the McKechnie Institute has played host to working men and women in the area since it was opened by a benevolent business man back in 1889. Originally, the ground floor had a library, reading room and ladies room and on the first floor there was a billiards room. The place was always packed with labouring men, fishermen and tradesmen and the institute is still used to this day by the community. Now there are exhibitions in both the upstairs and downstairs galleries relating to the history of the area in terms of trade, travel and fishing and there are regular group meetings, councillor surgeries and art classes.
