From the Old Masters to lady Victorian painters, Ferens Art Gallery in Hull is packed with wonderful art work that spans 500 years. In gallery one and two you’ll find works from the 16th, 17th and 18th century including Frans Hals’ Portrait of a Young Woman while in galleries three and five stunning classics from Canaletto (A View on the Grand Canal) and Constable dominate. In Galleries five and six see the endeavours of Lady Elizabeth Butler, Charles Spencelayh and Fred Elwell. What we love about this art gallery is its dedication to helping little ones appreciate art too and in gallery ten, the innovative Children’s Gallery, there are plenty of interactive exhibits to encourage kids to develop a taste for art. Ask for a family resources pack too. Upstairs in gallery 11 you can trace the development of British painting during the first half of the 20th century. There’s a great café, La Loggia, to rest your weary feet after all that. The unique Live Arts Space hosts a varied programme of events and activities from concerts to lectures.
