Royal Pump Room Museum

Royal Pump Room Museum is housed in Harrogate´s premier spa building and the site of Europe´s strongest sulphur well, tells the story of Harrogate as a spa. The distinctive octagonal building was built in 1842 by Isaac Shutt. Opened in 1953 as a museum, it now houses displays of the bizarre spa treatments that made the town a favourite with the Victorians. You can still see the sulphur wells and taste the water, which was purported to have healing qualities to cure anything from gout to lumbago.
