There are some 2,000 works of art tucked inside the handsome Mercer Art Gallery in Harrogate (built as the city's first spa building in 1806), mainly from the 19th and 20th century periods, which make for some very lively and entertaining exhibitions. Expect names such as William Powell Frith, Alan Davie, Dame Laura Knight, Atkinson Grimshaw and Sir Edwards Burne-Jones to pop up as you wander the two galleries here. There are also many touring exhibitions featured at the gallery that can specialise in art forms such as photography, crafts and sculpture. Exhibitions to look forward to in 2014 include Art and Yorkshire: From Turner to Hockney and Frank Brangwyn War Posters: Commemorating World War One.
