The Royal Holloway and Bedford New College Art Collections

Royal Holloway’s founder, Thomas Holloway (1800–1883) used part of the fortune he amassed from the manufacture and sale of his ‘cure-all’ pills and ointment to form a modern art collection for his College, its students and visitors. Holloway purchased artworks at an astonishing rate, acquiring 77 paintings, mainly at auction, between May 1881 and June 1883. The collection is now viewed as an exceptional example of late Victorian taste and provides a brilliant insight into what was then the market for
contemporary art.

Queen Victoria noted that the Holloway collection contained many ‘well known’ pictures, and picked out 'Man proposes, God disposes' by Sir Edwin Landseer, 'The Railway Station' by William Powell Frith, 'The Princes in the Tower' by Sir John Everett Millais and 'The Babylonian Marriage Market' by Edwin Long for particular praise.
