To get a grasp of the local history and heritage of Hereford, a trip to Hereford Museum & Art Gallery should be your first stop. Housed in a beautiful Victorian gothic building, it’s crammed with unique artefacts and fine and decorative art that have connections to the area, including 270 oil paintings dating from the 17th century to the present day. Step inside the foyer and you’ll be greeted with a regularly changing display and as you climb the stairs admire a stunning Kenchester mosaic. A handy way to get around is by following a timeline set on the walls, created by artist Harry Brockway, which notes major events, places and people. Highlights include paintings such as George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) by Dame Laura Knight and a large body of work by WWI artist Brian Hatton, a local resident.
