City Museum & Art Gallery


The City Museum & Art Gallery is a fine Victorian building housing items of national importance since 1860. These include many archaeological finds such as Roman sculpture and the Rufus Sita tombstone; the amazing Iron Age Birdlip Mirror; one of the earliest backgammon sets in the world; dinosaur bones; fossils; natural history; silver gallery; and paintings that include works by Turner and Gainsborough. The first floor has been completely re-displayed with coins, a Time Gallery, fine 18th century furniture, glass and ceramics. Interactive activities include the Furniture Explorer and testing bank notes. There are wide-ranging temporary exhibitions along with children´s holiday activities and special events.
