Torre Abbey Historic House & Gallery
Torre Abbey Historic House was built in 1196 for the 'White Canons', a silent order and one of the richest in England. it is home to the echoing Spanish Barn, where 400 sailors from the Spanish Armada were held captive. The later rooms were used as a Georgian family home. The House is now closed for phase 2 of a Heritage Lottery Funded restoration project and will be reopening in 2013/2014. From 31 October the gardens will remain open, during the week while the head gardener is in attendance, and will be free to visit. Look out for regular updates on how the project is progressing via torre-abbey.org.uk.
