Cumberland Pencil Museum

You’ll enter the Cumberland Pencil Museum through a replica of the Seathwaite mine where graphite was first discovered and from there take a turn around the surprisingly fascinating history of the pencil. So what’s to see? Well, I rather like the exhibition of the secret pencil that was manufactured by the British government and M19 during WWII that had a hidden map and compass to help stranded Allied pilots. There’s also the world’s longest colour pencil to inspect plus a kids’ art studio to keep little ones busy while you wander around the exhibitions. I also like the cute history to this place too – apparently the managing director of the Cumberland Pencil Company back in 1980 realised that there was a lot of interest in this little industry that had grown up around Keswick and started asking for memorabilia to start a museum in the former factory canteen. The Pencil Museum van, a 1954 Morris J Type well known to locals, was discovered under rubbish in a warehouse and now has been restored and has pride of place out front of the museum. A lovely stop.
