Big Pit: National Coal Museum

The Big Pit: National Coal Museum offers an insight into the life of South Wales miners and their communities and is unique to Wales. The guided tours are given by ex-miners who equip you with helmet, cap-lamp and battery pack before taking you down 300 ft to the coalface to experience the blackness that the miners worked in day after day. For over 200 years this was the workplace for hundreds of men, women and children who struggled to extract the precious mineral for furnaces and fires around the world. On the surface you can see the colliery buildings, winding engine-house and pithead baths. Best UK museum 2005.
