City of Winchester Museum

The City of Winchester Museum is situated in the centre of Winchester. The Museum tells the story of the city with its extensive archaeological and local history collections - how Winchester was a major Roman centre and afterwards under Alfred the Great, the capital of Wessex. The story continues through the centuries with Winchester´s renewed royal interest when Charles II built a palace here in the 17th century. Later it became a fashionable county town in the 18th century and the displays include reconstructed Victorian & Edwardian shops.
