The Canal Museum

The Canal Museum in Stoke Bruerne is situated in a beautiful canal side village with a 'living canal' on its doorstep. The Museum is located in a restored corn mill alongside the Grand Union Canal and you can easily imagine what life was like in the 1840's when it was a working mill receiving cargo from boats on the canal. Discover amazing feats of engineering, and see the shining brass and colourful decoration that contrast so sharply with the harsh reality of canal life. The fascinating insight into the transport system so fundamental to the industrial revolution in Britain, is complemented by the 'living canal' outside with its flight of locks, boats and Blisworth Tunnel. The Museum features examples of canal painted ware and the type of clothing worn by boat men and women. The Museum visit includes an excellent audio trail which takes you along the towpath to the historic Blisworth Tunnel, explaining the history you can see around you.
