Sitting in the pleasant castle quarter of Bedford on the north side of the Ouse, The Higgins Art Gallery and Museum reopened after extensive work in the summer of June 2013 to combine the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, Bedford Museum and Bedford Gallery. The museum is housed in a lovely Victorian mansion and is a recreation of an 1880s home with lovely examples of 19th century decorative arts on display. Don’t miss the famous Gothic Room with works by English architect and designer William Burges. Expect dreamy watercolours, prints and drawings from the likes of Gainsborough, Cotman, Constable, Turner, Burne-Jones, Freud, Picasso and Warhol.
