American Museum in Britain

Opened in 1961, the American Museum in Britain was the original idea of Dallas Pratt and John Judkyn who wanted to show the achievements of Americans in decorative arts. A series of 18 period rooms demonstrate how Americans lived between the late 17th and mid-19th centuries, with galleries devoted to Folk Art, silver, pewter, glass, American Indian and an extensive textile collection. Each year there is a temporary exhibition and also a programme of events. The grounds contain an arboretum of American trees and shrubs as well as a replica of the garden at Mount Vernon, George Washington´s Virginia home.
