Both a national museum and the finest private art collection ever assembled by one family. It was bequeathed to the nation by Sir Richard Wallace´s widow in 1897 and is displayed on three floors of Hertford House. Unsurpassed collections of French 18th century painting, furniture and porcelain are assembled together with Old Master paintings by, among others, Titian, Canaletto, Rembrandt, Hals, Rubens, and Gainsborough. A magnificent collection of armoury is shown with further important displays of gold boxes, miniatures, and sculpture, fine medieval and Renaissance works of art, including maiolica, glass, Limoges enamels, silver and jewellery. By the terms of the bequest nothing must be added or loaned ensuring it retains the eclectic character of its collectors in an intimate, familiar setting. Free exhibitions, public and family activities.

Wallace Collection is part of the following Editors' Picks:

The Ten Best Smaller Museums and Galleries by Olivia Greenway

"A short walk from Bond Street tube station, the 25 galleries of the Wallace Collection are housed in a smart 18th century townhouse, previously owned by the Marquesses of Hertford and Sir Richard Wallace. His wife left the house to the nation in 1897. It’s a spectacular building with an equally impressive collection of French, British and Oriental objects. Most famous, perhaps, is Hals’ ‘The Laughing Cavalier’ but there are works by Titian, Rembrandt and Canaletto. A lovely airy café and decent bookshop make this a good diversion from Oxford Street shopping. Free admission. Open daily. Good disabled access."
