Guildhall Art Gallery & Roman London´s Amphitheatre
Guildhall Art Gallery & Roman London´s Amphitheatre was established in 1885. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1941 and the new Art Gallery was opened in 1999. The interior is designed around Britain´s largest independent oil painting, a battle scene, by John Singleton Copley, which spans two floors. Collections on display are mostly British including Victorian art and sculpture along with famous Pre-Raphaelite works, London subjects from the 17th century to the present and portraits from the 16th century onwards. The remains of Roman London´s Amphitheatre, unearthed on the site in 1988, are also on view. There is a programme of changing temporary exhibitions.
