The Castle Hotel

The Square, Bishop's Castle, Shropshire, SY9 5BN

The Castle Hotel is located in a quiet square in the small market town of Bishop's Castle, midway between Shrewsbury and Ludlow. In the heart of the Shropshire Hills there is much to explore, both in Shropshire and neighbouring Wales. It is surrounded by great walking country including Offa's Dyke and The Long Mynd. The ten en-suite bedrooms are individually furnished, some with lovely views of the town, hills or garden. There is a choice of eating venues, each with its own character and all serving food that is flavoursome and fresh. The hotel gardens provide a great vantage point to view the surrounding hills, preferably with a glass of something inebriating in hand and the promise of dinner in the air. Bishops Castle is a fine little town, with a strong arts and crafts tradition and plenty of antique shops and tea rooms to loiter in.

The Castle Hotel is part of the following Travel Ideas:

Ten of The Best Hotels in Shropshire by Adrian Mourby

"Bishop’s Castle received its Royal Charter in 1249. In 1719 an inn was constructed on the outer bailey of its ruined castle. The builder was the Duke of Chandos, MP and patron of Handel. Today The Castle has half its bedrooms at the top of a gracious eighteenth-century staircase and the other half in the servants’ garret. A great base for exploring Offa’s Dyke."

Review of The Castle Hotel

We really enjoyed our stay with you, the room was lovely and the little extras really do make a difference. We found all of the staff to be very helpful and efficient right from the start when we were shown to our room rather than being handed a key as we are used to. The food was piping hot and very tasty although we did find the portion sizes a little large for us I suppose that this is not the same for everyone.
We certainly intend to visit again in warmer weather when we can hopefully explore the local countryside.

we very much enjoyed your hospitality, helpful staff and that you all went the extra mile, especially making our little dog welcome too. We hope to come back again next year!

It was our first ever visit to Bishops Castle. Your location was really good and was an ideal base for our walks in Shropshire. As for your hotel our room was very spacious and clean. We both slept well too.

We really enjoyed our meals at the hotel. The chef(s) were excellent with all the different meals that we ordered. The rest of your staff were really nice too and made us feel very welcome.

We still have several Shropshire walks to conquer from our '1001 AA walks' book so we will certainly look forward to another visit in the future.

Thank you very much for making it a wonderful three night stay.

I had a very excellent stay at your hotel -- it could not have been better . You have very good staff , a beautiful building , great rooms and food.   These things do not happen by chance , you have obviously worked very hard to get them right. I look forward to coming back next year and staying for longer and exploring the local area.

This is an old hotel, full of character. The rooms are clean and most have lovely views over the quaint town. The service is friendly and helpful, the food and wine are very good and quite reasonably priced. We have been here twice and loved it each time.
