For over 100 years the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel has been offering some of the best hotel views in Wales. The Victorian reservoir immediately below this purpose-built hotel is a birdwatcher’s delight, offering sightings of goshawks, peregrines, buzzards and red kites. Meanwhile high on the nearby moorlands hen harriers and merlins have been spotted. The hotel appeals equally to hardened hill walkers and weekend ramblers with an AA-Rosetted restaurant to come home to at the end of the day. Of the 52 individually decorated bedrooms, 34 have lake views and some have Jacuzzi baths. Décor in the public areas has wisely retained some charming period features.

Ten Great British Touring Hotels by Adrian Mourby
"Driving south from the Snowdonia National Park there’s a small road that runs from Lake Bala through Rhos-y-Gwaliau and up into the mountains that separate North and Mid Wales. Dusted with snow from November to March, this is an adventurous single track that drops you down the narrow Nadroed Valley to a long, tree-shrouded man-made lake. Lake Vyrnwy was begun in 1899 to supply water to the city of Liverpool. At the same time as the lake was under construction, a hotel was built overlooking the mighty reservoir. In 1910 George, Prince of Wales arrived at the hotel to declare this major engineering project complete. Very little has changed inside the hotel since 1910, although quite a few Jacuzzi baths have now been installed in rooms with lake views. This is a hotel for relaxing in after a day on the roads, with the prospect of continuing south the next day to Powys Castle and the charming town of Montgomery."
Ten Places to Stay for Animal Lovers by Kate Simon
"The natural beauty of the Vyrnwy Estate, in the Berwyn Mountains, makes this hotel the ideal nest for birdwatchers. Some of the 52 rooms feature balconies and lake views – so pull up a chair to spot the abundance of feathered visitors, which includes goshawks, peregrines, buzzards and red kites, while hen harriers and merlins might make an appearance over the moorland and forest."
Ten of the Best Historic Welsh Hotels by Adrian Mourby
"In 1889 a huge dam across the Vyrnwy river created a new water supply for Liverpool, drowning the village of Llanwddyn and its Powis Arms Hotel. A year later a huge new hotel overlooking the reservoir was opened. George, Prince of Wales arrived at the hotel in 1910 to declare this major engineering project complete. Today the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel is delightfully unchanged, a warm, cosy piece of Victoriana."
