Airds Hotel & Restaurant

Port Appin, Appin, Argyll & Bute, PA38 4DF

Located on the stunning shores of Loch Linnhe with the mountains beyond, this luxury hotel never disappoints. With it's award-winning dinners and whisky macs before bedtime, you’ve got a picture of Airds Hotel on the West Coast of Scotland. This eleven-room luxury hotel sits in Port Appin in the shadow of the majestic Morvern Mountains and there’s plenty to do should you be able to tear yourself away from the comforts indoors. Take a boat to Mull or Skye, go cycling on the Island of Lismore or saddle up for a horse trek along the shores of Loch Linnhe. Or simply immerse yourself in Scotland’s dramatic history – there are lots of castles to explore in this rugged landscape. Special mention must go to the hotel’s award-winning restaurant whose food does not play second fiddle to the awesome views. Plan ahead and time your visit to coincide with one of the head chef’s gourmet seven-course dinner nights with wine handpicked to match the courses.

The hotel also benefits from having 2 luxury self catering cottages on site for those guests who would like a little more independence but still have all the amenities of a hotel.

10 Great Hotels for Romance this February by Adrian Mourby

"The team at this old whitewashed, loch-side inn are softies for romance. Recently when they overheard a guest proposing – and being accepted – over dinner they nipped upstairs and sprinkled the couple’s bed with rose petals. Airds is a delightful getaway with gorgeous views across to the Scottish Islands. It’s the kind of place where on a February afternoon you curl up with a good book in front of a roaring fire and decide you’re never going back to work.

Walks along Loch Linnhe have proved themselves a good pretext for romance and Shaun, the owner of Airds, has been known to give Cupid a helping hand, placing a bottle of champagne and two glasses further along the path. The location of the hotel is so remote there’s no danger that local ne’er-do-wells will have made off with it before the (soon to be) happy couple arrive."

Britain's Finest Hotels For Afternoon Tea by Adrian Mourby

"Situated in a tranquil spot on the west coast of Scotland, Airds lies at the end of a long, narrow road and enjoys lovely views over Loch Linnhe. Breakfasts at Airds are a delight with a generous portion of whisky in your porridge (on request). Dinner too is a treat with drinks before an open fire while you’re perusing the menu. It’s not surprising therefore that afternoon tea is a similarly foodie affair. All teas include warm scones with home-made jams and clotted cream, the hotel’s renowned fruit cake and lovely homemade shortbread biscuits. The tea selection includes Darjeeling, Assam, peppermint, lemon tea, Lapsang Souchong , and camomile. If you order the Champagne Tea you get a glass of Maillart, Premier Cru. Port Appin is one of those places where people go to relax and forget about the stresses of modern life. You’d never guess that in 1752 it was the scene of the Appin Murder, a notorious event that partly inspired Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Kidnapped."

Top ten UK hotels and Inns with cookery classes by Adrian Mourby

"Nestled between two lochs on Scotland’s west coast, Airds is a perfect Argyll weekend hideaway with big comfortable sofas, decanters of Whisky Mac in the bedrooms and lots of wonderful food. At various times of the year the hotel shares its culinary prowess with small groups of eight, always instilling in them the fun of learning. The theme of these weekends is usually how to prepare a successful dinner party. There is practical instruction too, with guests learning how to make something challenging, like a sugar cage. And there’s usually a lot of laughter heard coming out of the kitchen. Courses run over a weekend, starting on Friday night with a quick get together before dinner and the real work starting after breakfast on Saturday. This first day finishes around 4.30pm with an hour’s break for lunch. Work resumes in the kitchen on Sunday with guests departing after lunch. From £550 2 nights including dinner, bed and breakfast"

10 Hotels for Great Spring Country Walks by Adrian Mourby

"Airds is a small but extremely cozy hotel on the west coast of Scotland overlooking the ferry crossing to Lismore Island. A decanter of Whisky Mac (a traditional cocktail of whisky and ginger wine) awaits every guest and there are always drinks and canapés in the two drawing rooms Airds’ famous seven-course gourmet dinner in the modern restaurant extension. The next morning you’ll feel in need of a stroll, particularly after a generous helping of breakfast. Follow the road down to Port Appin, the tiny whitewashed dock from which a ferry still runs across to Lismore. From here you can continue all the way out to the headland of the small peninsula on which Port Appin sits before turning inland in the direction of Cliff Cottage and arriving at the back of the hotel through the woods. It’s a two-mile walk that has wonderful views across Loch Linhe. Be sure to take your camera."

The 10 Best Hotels for Visiting Scottish Distilleries by Adrian Mourby

"Ben Nevis – Airds: Ben Nevis Distillery was established in 1825, making it one of the oldest in Britain. The founder of this famous single malt was “Long John” MacDonald who named it after the mountain that provides its water. Water is one of the two essential ingredients of whisky, the other being barley but it is the supply of water flowing from two small lochans high up in the shoulder of Ben Nevis that makes this whisky so special. If you like the taste make sure you buy a bottle at the distillery. Ben Nevis is on sale at very few outlets. After your visit, drive 20 miles west towards the sea and Airds Hotel, a delightfully restored Highland inn at Port Appin on the Airds promontory. This is one of Scotland’s best boutique hotels with just eleven luxurious bedrooms, inside of which you’ll find a decanter of Whisky Mac (a warming Scots cocktail of whisky and ginger wine) waiting in every room. In the evening enjoy whisky and canapés in the well-upholstered drawing rooms before enjoying dinner in the modern restaurant extension. From here you can take a boat over to the islands of Mull or Skye and continue your exploration of Scotch whisky."

Ten Places to Stay Near Water by Kate Simon

"This 11-room hotel on Scotland’s west coast puts sublime views of placid lochs and the dramatic mountains on your doorstep. Just cross the road to pick up the path around the Appin peninsula to admire the Firth of Lorne or stroll along the banks of nearby Loch Laich to look out at Castle Stalker, cast adrift on its tiny islet."

Ten Historic Hotels in the Highlands by Adrian Mourby

"The earliest reference to this harbour hotel goes back to 1720 when there were 24 rooms and the customers were drovers en route to market in Glasgow. The years have been kind to Airds and today it revels in its Relais & Chateau status and sumptuous decor. The Airds House nearby in Appin was built in 1738 for Donald Campbell of Airds who commanded a pro-Hanoverian militia at the Battle of Culloden. Campbell of Airds is remembered for his leniency to the defeated Jacobites."

Ten Active Scottish Breaks by Kate Simon

"Get out the walking boots for a trip to this elegant 11-room hotel on the banks of Loch Linnhe. It’s the perfect place from which to stride out and explore the 12 surrounding munros - you could even try tackling Ben Nevis, just an hour up the road. At night reward your efforts with gourmet dining in the hotel’s 3 AA Rosette restaurant."

Review of Airds Hotel & Restaurant

This small hotel sits in a lovely spot overlooking Loch Linnhe. The rooms are of variable size and position, but are very well appointed with lots of little extras, including a small decanter of whisky mac! The staff are very attentive and chatty, but do not hover at all. They always keep an eye open to see what is needed, even before you realise yourself what you need! The food is fantastic, and the attention to detail is superb. I mentioned that I prefer cheese to dessert, but don't eat unpasteurised cheese - so pasteurised was available each night. I also mentioned that I don't generally eat blue cheese, so when the nibbles arrived with pre-dinner drinks, this had been taken into account, and I was given one nibble minus the blue cheese which was usually a part of the dish - without my asking. Impressive. Often on leaving an expensive hotel, you can feel a little disappointed, feeling that you might have expected a bit more. Not here. I have left each time feeling glad to have stayed here, and looking forward to returning, and not resenting at all the cost, which is certainly not inconsiderable, but also not excessive and certainly worth it!

Lovely hotel with wonderful food and beautiful views. However, what sets this hotel apart from so many other wonderful places was the fabulous service. We spent three weeks touring Scotland and Ireland staying in exquisite hotels. This hotel had the best service of all. The service was seamless, like things just occurred. The staff are wonderful, but it was more than that. I can't imagine how much thought and effort that goes into every guest and their every need, but it definitely showed. The food was very good also. The scallops and pasta was over the top outstanding, as were many more of the choices. We also loved the breakfasts. It is great location to enjoy Oban, enjoy the countryside, and take a boat ride to Islay.

Throughout our stay, the attention to detail in all aspects of the hotel was superb. The courteous and friendly nature of the staff, the impeccable but un-intrusive service in the dining room and the relaxed atmosphere all contributed to making our visit truly memorable
