Top UK hotels to enjoy the Autumn Sun by Adrian Mourby

"The River Clyde provides great panoramas to the north and east of Mar Hall. Simply by standing in the car park you’ll get a fine uninterrupted view across to the Kirkpatrick Hills. This splendid hotel was originally called Erskine House. It was built between 1828 and 1845 to designs by Sir Robert Smirke, the architect of the British Museum, but it took the name of the Earl of Mar, hereditary owner of the estate when turned into a hotel during the twentieth century. Today its 240-acre woodland estate is also home to a golf course with equally good views. Glasgow may sound like a chilly place to visit in the autumn, but the air above the Clyde is refreshing and in the evening the Cristal Dining Room - lit by seven 20-foot tall windows – is a great place to warm up. The menu includes seared Loch Fyne scallops, Venison with a heather honey foam and Haggis, neeps and tatties with whisky café au lait."

10 great alternatives to airport hotels by Adrian Mourby

"Splendid Mar Hall, built to designs by the architect of the British Museum, is nothing like an airport hotel and yet it’s remarkably close to Glasgow airport. As both are on the northeast side of the city it’s actually much more convenient to stay the night at Mar Hall than to trek into Glasgow in search of a hotel. Just ten minutes north in the car will bring you to this dignified five-star country house hotel with its magnificent views of the Kirkpatrick Hills. There is a stately Cristal Dining Room lit by seven 20-foot tall windows and a lot of locally sourced items on the menu. And just think: everyone else is currently at Starbucks or Tennents’ Pier Bar down at the airport."

The 10 Best Hotels for Visiting Scottish Distilleries by Adrian Mourby

"Loch Lomond – Mar Hall: The Loch Lomond Distillery was founded in 1965. Its current owners are the Bulloch family who can trace their interest in Scotch Whisky back to 1842 when Gabriel Bulloch partnered with J H Dewar in a whisky-wholesaling business in nearby Glasgow. By 1985 the Bullochs were finding it difficult to source sufficient stocks of Scotch whisky to ensure the growth of their house blend Glen Catrine so they bought up three distilleries. That which doesn’t go into Glen Catrine is presented as Loch Lomond Single Malt Scotch which has a mellow, slightly peaty nose, with a hint of brandy butter. The taste on the palette is sweet and smokey. The distillery also produces Loch Lomond Single Blend whisky, a unique product that blends grain whiskies and a number of different malt whiskies on the Loch Lomond site. Mar Hall is an imposing mansion twelve miles south of Loch Lomond and ten miles from Glasgow Airport. It has fifty three suites and bedrooms, a championship golf course, a Cristal fine dining room lit by seven long windows and great views over the Kirkpatrick Hills. The hall was built as Erskine House between 1828 and 1845 to designs by Sir Robert Smirke, the architect of the British Museum. During the First World War it became the Princess Louise Hospital for Limbless Sailors and Soldiers but it took the name of the Earl of Mar, hereditary owner of this land, when it was turned into a hotel. It is now the 5-star Mar Hall Hotel, recalling the estate’s former ownership by the Earl of Mar."

Top Ten Mid-Summer Wedding Venues by Liz Coggins

"This magnificent Gothic style mansion with its gold and cream colour scheme, towering windows, that flood its function rooms with natural light, could have been designed with weddings in mind. Overlooking The River Clyde and Kilpatrick Hills, it has an opulent marquee with flowing cream drapes, crystal chandeliers and a 'starlit sky' for larger weddings."

Ten Active Scottish Breaks by Kate Simon

"Close to Glasgow, discover a 53-room hotel with one of Scotland’s most exciting new golf courses, the 18-hole Earl of Mar championship course, designed by Dave Thomas, the man behind The Belfry in England and La Manga in Spain. Views of the River Clyde and the Kilpatrick Hills provide compelling diversions on this 18-hole, 6,507-yard, par 70 parkland course."

Review of Mar Hall Golf & Spa Resort

Posted on by P GCustomer stayed Jan 2013

Have recently stayed here for an overnight stay in mid January. We stayed in a deluxe room on dinner, bed and breakfast, which did not disappoint!! During our stay we used the spa facilities which were exceptional and with wonderful and very helpful staff, we had a very relaxing and comfortable visit.
I have to strongly recommend you make it to breakfast as it the best I have experienced in any hotel stay!
I have since returned for afternoon tea to share the experience with my family members.
Weather it's to just dine or to be pampered in the spa, or enjoy an overnight of relaxation in great surroundings, it's worth a trip!

My husband and I took a short break here and can not recommend it more. The hotel is stunning, the dinner was delicious, the staff friendly and the spa facilities were excellent. We really enjoyed sitting in the lounge area after our meal and listening to the live pianist. We were made to feel extremely welcome and would definitely return to visit again. The views are stunning.

We have stayed at Mar Hall several times and got engaged on our visit last year. I would recommend it to anyone.
The grounds are stunning and the grandeur of the hotel is lovely giving such a welcoming feel, all the rooms we have stayed in have been great and all individually decorated. The facilities are spotless and relaxing and we have spent time in the spa which is worth trying out for a relaxing break. The food in both the main restaurant and Italian il Posto are lovely with excellent service.
We like the hotel so much we are now getting married July 2014 in the burgundy suite, with our evening in the marquee, can't wait, so exciting, our photos in their grounds over looking the old Kilpatrick hills and golf course with be fab :)

Beautiful location, luxury throughout! wonderful spa with swimming pool, sauna, steam rooms and gymnasium. Food was to die for with the best breakfast we've had in any hotel! will definitely return, perhaps in the summer so as to take advantage of the brilliant looking golf course. another bonus is this hotel is only about 10 minutes drive from Braehead shopping centre and also Glasgow airport.

The hotel is set in beautiful grounds. Made to feel both welcomed and important. Every need catered for and went above and beyond.

Dinner was set in beautiful room and was 'perfect'. Wasn't big portions but I was still full. Full of flavours. Breakfast was decent traditional English breakfast but choice of other breakfasts was available.

Pool was nice but the water a wee but on cold side. Jacuzzi wasn't up to much but sauna and steam rooms were lovely.

Room was large, spacious and well designed. Beautiful views over the course and waters and lots of wildlife to see on walks.

Will go again.

Just returned from the most fantastic luxurious overnight at this charismatic, lavish hotel. Couldn't recommend it highly enough, all of the other guests we spoke to agreed. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful.
Dinner and breakfast were top class and could not be faulted.
Our room was stunning, the ultimate in luxury, with outstanding views over the kilpatrick hills and river Clyde.
The spa, treatment rooms and swimming pool added to peaceful and relaxing experience and overall feel of the hotel.
I can't wait till next time!

I would like to recommended il posto restaurant at mar hall. This is a hidden gem of a restaurant set in the grounds of the luxury mar hall. The service was excellent and food delicious and considering it is a 5 star venue the prices were reasonable.

My husband and I got married here in July 2012. The wedding was the best day of our lives and I have no doubt that the staff at Mar Hall were such a big factor of this. Jenny, our wedding co-ordinator was wonderful and helped us every step of the way. We had a very large number of guests who stayed in the hotel and spoke very highly of the hotel and their staff. A few of us stayed two nights in the hotel and dined in their new Italian restaurant which was wonderful!
This hotel definitely deserves its 5 Star rating and Dean, the Hotel Manager continues this 5 Star service by ensuring a personalised stay for all the hotel guests. Nothing was ever a problem! I felt like a princess on my wedding day and stay at this hotel and I would recommend a stay at Mar Hall to anyone!

I always go out of my way to recommend a hotel when I've had a superb experience, because I value reviews so much. At Mar Hall, I really had nothing to complain about at all. The staff were attentive without being pushy, the food was delicious, the facilities were great and the rooms beautiful, clean and elegant.

I would love to go back again, thanks so much for such a lovely time.
