Middlethorpe Hall Hotel, Restaurant & Spa

Bishopthorpe Road, York, North Yorkshire, YO23 2GB

Built in 1699, Middlethorpe Hall (now part of the National Trust) is an impressive William III country house close to York city and set in 20 acres of award-winning gardens and parkland alongside York Race Course. The Hall has been expertly restored, and the magnificent reception rooms have been decorated with antiques and fine paintings consistent with the period of the house. The oak paneled dining room overlooks sweeping lawns and ha-ha, offering a menu that is quite irresistible. Rooms in the main house and C18th Courtyard are decorated with classical flair and come with fresh flowers, homemade biscuits and fluffy dressing gowns. The Hall was donated to the National Trust in September 2008.

Britain’s Finest Georgian Hotels by Adrian Mourby

"Strictly speaking, Middlethorpe Hall is a William and Mary house and not Georgian at all given that it was completed in 1702, the last year of William III’s reign. George of Hanover would not arrive as King of Great Britain until 1714 but this house has all the qualities of an early Georgian home and none of the baroque excesses of William and Mary’s favourite architect, Sir Christopher Wren. The house was built for Thomas Barlow, a prosperous master cutler who bought the Middlethorpe estate outside York in a bid to establish himself as a country gentleman. He sited his mansion right next to the main road, rather than at the end of a long drive, as if keen that as many people as possible would witness his wealth. When Thomas and his son went on the Grand Tour in 1712 they let the house to Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, who had just eloped with her husband but would go on to be an eminent Georgian woman of letters. Today visitors to Middlethorpe can enjoy the very sensible and comfortable dimensions of Middlethorpe, either staying in the main house or in the former stable block."

Top Ten Venues for Winter Weddings by Liz Coggins

"“Tis a very pretty place”, said Lady Mary Wortley Montague back in 1713 – a description that still befits this impressive romantic manor house situated close York City Centre. The upstairs sitting room is perfect for small intimate ceremonies followed by a reception in the elegant Yellow Room overlooking the rolling lawns; whilst the majestic oak staircase is one any bride would cherish descending."

Ten of the Best Hotels in North Yorkshire by Adrian Mourby

"Middlethorpe is one of the National Trust’s Yorkshire gems. For those who love William and Mary architecture this house, built in 1699, cannot be bettered. It was designed for Thomas Barlow, a wealthy Sheffield industrialist and is furnished today with eighteenth-century antiques and chequered marble floors. Ask for one of the ten rooms in the house itself for the full heritage experience."

Review of Middlethorpe Hall Hotel, Restaurant & Spa

Posted on by Alistair MCustomer stayed Jan 2015

I am thoroughly impressed by the service I received at Middlethorpe hall. Staying there for two nights just wasn't long enough. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The food was delicious; I wish I'd had time to taste all the dishes. The chefs provided an innovative and a reliably delicious menu (especially the soufle). The grounds were beautiful, I just wish it had been warm enough to spend more time in the gardens. Fortunately the house is lovely so we could relax in front of a fire and enjoy the surroundings. I hope to return soon and recommended it to anyone.
