If I say this is the sort of place that popstars playing nearby stay at (it is), it might give you an idea of what Ettington Park near Stratford Upon Avon is like. A Neo-Gothic Mansion surrounded by 40 acres of parkland and with outside dining terraces that make you feel like an extra in Downton Abbey, the hotel is seriously luxurious. Its 37 rooms and 11 suites are all styled immaculately and the public areas coo elegant comfort. The architecture (vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows) alone is worth the visit. But there’s lots more to look forward to besides - afternoon tea is an event not to be missed (with divine finger sandwiches) and the dinners served in the Oak Room dining room are exquisite. This one’s great for kids too, with plenty of clipped maze-like hedges for them to tear around. A real treat.
Ettington Park is part of the following Editors' Picks:
"Get your freak on with a night at this Neo-Gothic mansion close to Stratford, which featured in 1963 film The Haunting. If you hear the click of billiard balls and male voices coming from the library, it might not be other guests – the room is said to be haunted and there have even been reports of flying books. During a night here there’s also a chance you’ll meet Mary, a servant girl who died from a fall, or bump into two child ghosts who haunt a corridor. Spooktacular."
"This neo-gothic mansion is filled with exquisite antiques, fine paintings and tapestries hang from its walls radiating an atmosphere of warmth even on the coldest day. There are sheltered nooks outdoors in the parkland but its magnificent Grand Drawing Room, Library and Chapel with their ornate décor are perfect for photos and for your wedding breakfast."
"The Shirley family have been lords of the manor since the Domesday Book and Ettington Park was their neo-Gothic home in the 19th-century. Before being turned into a hotel, Ettington featured in the 1963 horror movie The Haunting. Its variegated stonework, ogee windows, panelled library and tall roofline make it a perfect – if slightly sinister - example of Victorian domestic architecture."
