The cream-coloured, ivy-clad façade of The Hoste is a welcoming sight for weary travellers. Among the abundance of wildlife, sporting facilities and bustling towns in East Anglia, make this 17th Century retreat your country abode and collapse on to one of the luxurious beds in a wonderful array of chic and characterful rooms (we recommend room 5 where Admiral Lord Nelson once stayed) laden with beautiful soft furnishings, patterned wallpaper and soft elegant lighting. You can even soothe sore muscles in the comfort of your private surroundings by booking a tailor-made pampering treat. Enjoy breakfasts and afternoon tea in the lounge, conservatory or, when it’s sunny, in the pretty walled garden, which includes a Garden Room and small lodge. The relaxed conviviality in the bar with its log fire is hard to beat, while exceptional food served up by the imaginative Hoste chefs is quite a treat too, matched only by the superb choice of over 300 wines.

Ten of the Best East Anglian Retreats by Jessica Baldwin

"Located in Burnham Market, one of North Norfolk’s prettiest villages, The Hoste is the perfect pit-stop for weary walkers and wildlife lovers. The 17th century pub boasts 58 boutique bedrooms, each with their own character. Think Molton Brown toiletries, pretty balconies and decadent beds complete with goose down pillows. After a day exploring Burnham Market’s independent cafés, boutiques and galleries, head to the restaurant and work your way through their enormous wine list – 300 bottles no less! If you still have a clear head in the morning head to Brancaster Staithe for sea air and saltmarshes."
