Proudly overlooking the quay, the smart blue and white Pier Hotel and Restaurant at Harwich is in poll position for views over the Stour and Orwell estuaries. The hotel is actually made up of two buildings, one of which was built in 1850s and houses two landmark restaurants the Ha’Penny and The Harbourside plus seven luxury bedrooms. The other, the former Angel public house dating back to the 1700s, extends the hotel and has a further seven bedrooms. Rooms are large, very tastefully decorated in neutrals and some have sofa beds for accompanying children (we love the one with picture windows and a telescope with which to study the boats). The hotel also operates a great little offer with the nearby Electric Cinema, a 1911 original silent screen gem in the town that shows an eclectic mix of films.

The Pier at Harwich is part of the following Editors' Picks:

Ten of the Best East Anglian Retreats by Jessica Baldwin

"Life in the historic town of Harwich revolves entirely around its busy quayside. Having received its charter back in the thirteenth century the town is steeped in history and boasts a lively nautical scene, with the busy harbour still offering regular ferry trips to Holland. However, if dry land is more your scene, book in to The Pier Hotel. Proudly located on the quay and you can take in the nautical views from the comfort of one of their fourteen contemporary rooms. Flooded with natural light the stylishly decorated rooms offer comfy beds, private bathrooms and free Wi-Fi."

Ten Historic Hotels in East Anglia by Adrian Mourby

"The Pier Hotel was built in 1862 in response to railway lines reaching this east coast port. On the outside it’s very much a Victorian take on the Venetian palazzo, standing close to the town’s famous Ha’Penny Pier. These days the hotel has fourteen enlarged contemporary rooms with a nautical feel to the decor. The Pier’s waterside restaurants are famed for their fish and chips."
