The phrase sea view was probably invented to describe the best asset of the Watersmeet Hotel. The vista across the Devon’s Woolacombe Bay is simply ridiculously perfect and we reckon to sit at one of the table and chair sets dotted about the terraced manicured lawns and look downwards at the roaring surf might just be the ultimate in relaxation. A former Edwardian gentleman’s retreat, the Watersmeet has been transformed into an elegant seaside hotel with every bedroom positioned to get maximum benefit from the hotel’s cliffside position. Many bedrooms have balconies too, making it easy to understand why some guests don’t even bother to leave the premises. More stunning views are to be had in the restaurant but if it’s sunny you’d be mad not to head outside to the terrace where you can lunch alfresco by the pool after a hearty National Trust coastal walk.

Watersmeet Hotel is part of the following Editors' Picks:

Ten Places to Stay Near Water by Kate Simon

"Woolacombe Bay provides the seafront action at this hotel in Devon. Just drink in the views from its 29 bedrooms - a panorama that takes in Combesgate Beach, Lundy Island and Baggy Point. Book a room with a balcony and watch the sunset crown the scene each evening. If you want to get into the briny, this place has some of the best surfing in the country."
