Ambleside has always been a great holiday destination, combining a bustling pretty town centre with great little cafes and shops, and it is surrounded by simply beautiful countryside. Rambling, pretty Rothay Manor is just a ten minute walk from the action but surrounded by 15 acres of landscaped gardens. There’s a country house feel to the place with just 16 bedrooms and three suites while the restaurant specialises in local food so expect breakfasts of bacon and Cumberland sausage from a producer in Ambleside, evening supper fish from Morecombe and Fleetwood and game from the fields of Cartmel and Holker Hall. The hotel is well-geared up for families, offering kids’ teatimes and baby listening services to make parents’ lives that bit easier. If it’s sunny, don’t miss tea on the lawn or a game of croquet. Guests get free use of Salutation Health Club and Spa which is just ten minutes' walk from the hotel.
Rothay Manor Hotel is part of the following Editors' Picks:
Ten Historic Hotels in the Lake District by Adrian Mourby
"This country house takes its name from the River Rothay, which was named the Red River by Viking settlers. The manor was built in 1823 as a private residence for a successful Liverpool merchant who wanted somewhere healthy and impressive to lodge his family. Much of the original Regency design can still be discerned. Since the 1960s the hotel has been owned and managed by the Nixon family."

Review of Rothay Manor Hotel
Posted on by JanetType of travel: Couples
This is a wonderfully relaxing place to stay. Our bedroom was large and comfortable and better than we expected. The staff not only go out of their way to make sure that you have everything you need but they do it with a smile. We booked for dinner, bed and breakfast and we were not disappointed, the choice and quality of the food is consistently high. Lovely touches, for example, canapés in the lounge before dinner and coffee with a plate of chocolates and fudge served afterwards, make this hotel stand out.

Staff were friendly and attentive (without being fawning). Food was out of this world. We weren't served anything we didn't enjoy. The shower in the room was the best out of all the hotels we've stayed in. The room was clean, comfortable and well furnished.
