Those who travel to Holbeck Ghyll go there for the Michelin-starred food, the astonishingly impressive views across Lake Windermere and the deeply luxurious nature of the place. This is five-star comfort all the way and staff will go to any lengths to make your stay a perfect one. There are 13 rooms and suites in the main house but we stayed in a cottage just across the lawn (just next to the suite where one Renee Zellweger lodged during her filming of the movie of Beatrix Potter’s life) where we were treated like kings – and the kids were babysat while we died and went to heaven in the dining room. I highly recommend eating a full English the next morning then sinking into an armchair with the paper (with Lake Windermere as backdrop) while your husband takes the kids on a walk. Divine.

Holbeck Ghyll Country House Hotel is part of the following Editors' Picks:

Ten Historic Hotels in the Lake District by Adrian Mourby

"This late nineteenth-century building was once Lord Lonsdale's hunting lodge and only became a hotel in the 1970s. Lonsdale was a great bon viveur, known as England's greatest sporting gentleman. He not only hunted and explored Alaska but founded the National Sporting Club and donated the original Lonsdale Belts for boxing. More recently, Holbeck Ghyll was featured in the Steve Coogan comedy The Trip and Renee Zellweger stayed here while filming the life of Beatrix Potter."

The Top Ten Themed Wedding Destinations by Liz Coggins

"This country house, is the ultimate choice for a lake side wedding with a pastoral theme. Awake on the day and stroll round the grounds to enjoy the silence and beauty of the landscape – where the gardens roll down to the lake in this perfect country paradise."
