The absolute stand-out attraction at Meudon near Falmouth, a well-known Cornwall hotel, is its utterly spectacular eight and a half acre sub-tropical garden. A riot of colour in spring and summer, ask the staff to pack you a picnic of fresh crab sandwiches and wind your way from the elegant sun terrace through the formal lawns and beds and on into the jungle-like final leg before arriving at the tiny Bream Cove where the Atlantic swells and recedes as you take lunch. This hotel, family run for decades, has a personal touch thanks to owner Gaye’s ever present readiness to help and it’s a wonderful treat to sit and feast on a cooked breakfast in the bright, sunny conservatory restaurant beneath a fruiting vine or sit with a coffee and cake in the hotel’s sun-soaked viewing gallery looking over the lawns (and stocked with fat novels with which while away the hours). This is the sort of place you feel loathe to leave.

Meudon Hotel at Bream Cove is part of the following Editors' Picks:

Cornwall vs Scotland for the perfect family holiday by Dinah Hatch

"The Meudon brings out the Famous Five in your kids, thanks to its meandering sub-tropical multiple terrace gardens that stretch for eight and a half wonderful glorious acres across a valley in Mawnam Smith, near Falmouth. Send them off with a pack of sandwiches (and some ginger beer!) and see how long it takes them to discover the little beach at Bream Cove where white sand and boulders provide an excellent picnic spot. Let the staff serve you tea and cake under a shady parasol and close your eyes to inhale the smell of the blooms and listen to the distant sounds of children’s laughter echoing through the foliage as you put your feet up. Rooms work well for families at the Meudon too. Book family suite Room 23 which has two interconnecting bedrooms, each with their own en-suite plus a lovely little roof terrace/balcony affair that allows you wonderful views of the gardens."

Ten of the Best Hotels with Gorgeous Grounds and Gardens by Dinah Hatch

"If it’s a sunny day, you’ve two choices at the Meudon. Either ask the wonderfully hospitable owner Gaye to pack you up a picnic of fresh crab sandwiches and wind your way along the path that leads through an eight and a half acre sub-tropical Cornish valley garden until it reaches Bream Cove (where dolphins and seals have been known to call). Or simply sit by the pond with a glass of something nice and a book and just sit and inhale the beauty that a team of gardeners (led by Gaye’s brother Mark) work so hard to preserve. Oh, and if it rains, no matter. Views from the restaurant over the green terraces seawards are breath-taking whatever the meteorological mood."

Ten Places to Stay Near Water by Kate Simon

"A hotel with a private beach, now that’s special. At this 29-bedroom country house (which has just been refreshed with contemporary styling), you’re invited to grab a beach towel and a good book and head through the beautiful tropical gardens to your own stretch of the sands. There, you’ll only be disturbed by the occasional pod of dolphins passing by."

Review of Meudon Hotel at Bream Cove

We have recently stayed at this little treasure of a hotel hidden on the south coast of Cornwall. All of the hotel staff went the extra in our caring. The family run hotel was to a high standard. The food was excellently presented and varied. The hotel had a cosiness. The garden valley down to the sea was a delight.

The telephone booking was easy and the receptionist most helpful in selecting the room. My wife is disabled and we were able to park our car next to a door that was less than 5 yards from our room. The room itself had all that we could want for our four day stay and the bed was very comfortable. The lift was a great benefit and we were placed on the nearest table to the lift in the dinning room that overlooked the splendid gardens. All the staff were friendly and helpful and no request was too much trouble. We would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to our friends.

Staff without exception most welcoming and efficient. Room (and bed) very comfortable and modern. Very beautiful view of garden (so well maintained and colourful). Public rooms equally impressive especially dining room with its beautiful views across the garden, down the valley to the sea. Food excellent and so well presented. Booking again.

We have just returned from a second visit to the Meudon Hotel. The friendliness and efficiency of the staff is excellent. It is in a beautiful part of Cornwall with a magnificent garden and its own private beach. Very comfortable beds. We hope to return soon.

We recently spent a weekend here after winning a competition online and I have to say that this hotel is an absolute hidden gem. From first arrival to the moment we left, staff were warm, friendly, welcoming and just couldn't do enough for you... A rare quality for hotels these days.

Having recently undergone a recent refurbishment the hotel has a lovely homely and relaxed feel, hotel rooms were airy and light with the biggest and comfiest double bed ever!!

The one thing that sets this hotel apart from others is the gardens, they are vast and absolutely stunning, with all paths leading to its own secluded cove and beach area... Perfect for the summer months!

Another huge plus point for this hotel is the food... Locally sourced, cooked to perfection and impeccably presented, and the staff in the restaurant were also spot on.

The Meudon has historically always been a magnet for an older crowd with guests returning year in and year out. With the recent refurb they are looking to attract a more diverse range of customers which I think they can achieve. Even though we were the youngest couple there we felt totally at home from the moment we arrived. The place is so chilled and inviting, but its the staff that made it for me, owner Gaye, Dave and Rita all of whom just could not do enough for us throughout our stay.

The Meudon is a hidden haven that seriously needs shouting about, a place to come and just unwind in glorious surroundings. If your looking for good food, great staff and a good location to explore then the Meudon is just what you need.

The most relaxing weekend I've ever had!!

We have just returned home from our annual pilgrimage to Cornwall. Whilst the weather was something of a mixed bag the Meudon was not. As usual we were able to chill out within seconds of arriving and so the mood remained for the entire stay of two weeks.
What really makes this place is the friendly and welcoming staff who just want to make you keep coming back year after year. The gardens leading all the way down to Bream Cove are fabulously wild and romantic. Oh yes, and the food is pretty good too!
Don't just take my word for it...try it yourselves!

We have stayed here many times over the last few years and for my money this is one of the best hotels in the Falmouth area [biased hotel guides and inspectors notwithstanding].
It is set in a scaled down version of the Trebah or Trelissick gardens; service and atmosphere excellent and food superior to nearby competitors boasting 2 AA rosettes. The quiet relaxation at this family-owned country hotel is marvellous. However if your idea of an ideal holiday is Benidorm or Faliraki, you may be happier staying at somewhere like Newquay.
It does not boast a swimming pool or ballroom or spa/gym [the apparent criteria for 4 stars] but it has its own private beach on Falmouth Bay and the walk through the sub-tropical gardens is ample opportunity for exercise. The hotel also has its own private yacht with skipper for hire.
Front of house management is very welcoming and efficient.
The restaurant is at its best with locally-sourced fresh fish dishes that have nearly always a slightly different twist to their presentation since our last visit. The talented young pastry chef is a gem - always devising novel, delicious desserts.
There is nothing stuffy here, with pleasant and efficient young waiters and waitresses joining the team from time to time.
Room comfort and cleanliness is impeccable.
Whilst the accommodation was built in the late 1960s, there has always been a rolling programme of updates and refurbishment , including the latest flat-screen TVs and wifi throughout, but now the hotel has started a rolling make-over of rooms that bodes well for the future.
